iceland's 5-star campground When we last visited Iceland it was a sparse, frigid moonscape with a strangely vibrant cultural scene. There were next to no tourists, despite Icelandic Air’s best attempts at getting people to spend a day or so there on the cheap NYC-Europe flights. Thanks to one of the most successful re-branding and marketing efforts ever, they have increased their tourist flow massively. Bringing 2.3 million tourists into a nation of 334,000 people has caused some disruptions. Those half-empty hotels are now booked far in advance and at rates a multiple of what they used to be. But Icelanders are an inventive, resourceful people, so they have established a huge 5-star 900-person city campground to accommodate the influx. It's $20/night vs $608 for our favorite, Hotel Borg.
