"Hedi Slimane might crush hard on the young indie musicians he plucks from the semi-obscurity of Los Angeles garage gigs, but he's not immune to the enduring appeal of iconic women. Marianne Faithful, Kim Gordon, Courtney Love, and Joni Mitchell have all posed for the brand in recent seasons. Now they're joined by the one and only Jane Birkin, who has just been captured by Slimane for the new campaign for Saint Laurent's revolutionary "Le Smoking" tuxedo.
The iconic suit was first designed in 1966, when a 20-year-old Birkin briefly appeared in the cult counterculture flick Blowup and women in trousers was still considered controversial. Since then it has become a powerful eveningwear classic, disseminated into the mainstream by Helmut Lang's 1975 images featuring androgynous models with slicked back hair. Birkin, of course, has an equally iconic fashion pedigree as the namesake of Hermès' most expensive handbag. Though that might not be the case forever." - Hannah Ongley via i-D Magazine
