In an era when Kendall Jenner – the half-sister of the reality star Kim Kardashian – is the face of Estée Lauder at 19, it might seem remarkable that no one signed up the beautiful, well-connected Rossellini until she was 28. But, once they did, it happened fast.

'In two or three photo-shoots I had the cover of Vogue and my career exploded,' she recalls. She was photographed by Helmut Newton, Steven Meisel and Annie Leibovitz, among others, and appeared on the covers of such magazines as Harper’s Bazaar and Vanity Fair. 'But I didn’t know that ageism was rampant in fashion,' she confesses, naively. 'No one asked me how old I was at the beginning, and when they found out: ‘Argh!’ She flaps her hands in mock panic. 'They were horrified.' -  Jane Mulkerrins via The Telegraph
