Aging is really just an accumulation of damage. This damage is either the result of bad behavior — smoking — or regular metabolic processes. The current most popular modality for dealing with this damage is to prevent it: free-radical suppression and such. However, there is another approach, one more audacious: repair the damage. This is what SENS is concentrating on. In his writingstalks and interviewsAubrey de Grey is its main evangelist. The biggest impediment, he feels, is not the science, as he says the first 1000-year-old human has already been born, but the existing belief system concerning aging and death. Is our aversion to extreme long life merely a way of avoiding the disappointment of failure to achieve it? Interesting question, and not one that I have an answer to.
